ESSAY:

"They made too many wrong mistakes," Yogi Berra shared after the New York Yankees lost the World Series in 1960. Although Berra said that, the Yankees had been successful during the regular season, winning 97 and losing 57 games. The Yankees were 6-5 underdogs for the series. In the 1960 major league baseball season, the Yankees faced many dilemmas but they still qualified for the World Series.

The first dilemma was the Yankees' poor performance (79wins and 75 losses) in the 1959 season. Their bad performance resulted in some paycuts. Some of the players accepted their paycut, while others did not want to take a paycut at all or as much. Bob Turley, the New York Yankees pitcher, accepted his paycut and he signed at about $28,000 ("Turley of Yanks Accepts Pay Cut", February 2, 1960). On the other hand, Mickey Mantle did not accept his paycut of about $15,000 less, he thought they were cutting him off too much money ("Mantle Rejects Pact, Calls Pay Cut Too Big", January 21, 1960). Mantle then left because he was upset with the paycuts.

The second dilemma that occurred during the 1960 season was that the New York Yankees were signing different contacts. Bob Turley signed two different contacts. Turley signed a six year contract as a Yankees player and he signed another contact for ten years as a major leaguer. Yogi Berra also signed over contracts ("Berra Signs 4 Yankee Contracts", January 29, 1960). All of the contract signings were affecting the Yankees manager, he began to worry.

The third dilemma was that now a worried manager was managing the Yankees through the baseball season. Contract signings were one of the things that worried him because he couldn't get the whole team together and that led to delayed practices. Not having the team together made it even harder to maintain and hold good, hard working, whole team practices. Another worry that was affecting the practices was the weather. The weather wasn't baseball weather, it was not good weather to be practicing in (during the season).

The fourth dilemma was that during a game against the Washington Senators, Mantle caught a flyball that ended the second game. When he was on his way to the Yankees dugout, people came from the stands onto the field. A mob attacked Mantle, leaving him a bruised jaw. While he was leaving the stadium, he also got punched and mauled by some fans. Mantle pushed his way through the crowd to escape. The press claimed that Mantle punched the fans in the mob while he tried to leave. People called the stadium and complained that Mantle hit them or their kids in the crowd. Mantle said, "I would never hit a kid, I have four of my own and I wouldn't hit a fan." ("Punching Tactics Denied By Mantle" June 1,1960).Mantle let it known that he did not hit anyone back. He said that he was just trying to escape the crowd ("Mantle Hurts Jaw In Running Battle With Mob of Fans" May 31, 1960).

The Yankees qualified to the World Series of 1960. It was down to the New York Yankees versus the Pittsburgh Pirates. Out on the field both teams wanted to win the World Series bad and each team was determined, but only one team could be called the winner and walk away known as the 1960 World Series champions. The last inning was either win it or lose it, it was the the inning that determined if the Yankees or Pirates would win. In that last inning, Bill Mazoroski stole the victory right from the Yankees. Mazoroski, from the Pittsburgh Pirates, made a homerun. That last homerun won the Pirates the 1960 World Series.

The final dilemma was, the Yankees pitched an idea of the city buying the Yankee Stadium. If the city brought the Stadium then the Yankees would be the co-tenants. William A. Shea wanted to build a new stadium, Flushing Meadow Stadium. Shea` was the founder of the Continental League. He also refused to play in the Yankee Stadium because they wanted their own stadium. The estimation of the new Flushing Meadow Stadium would be around $15,000,000 and they would be tripling bleachers to the capacity of 100,000. There would be new parking spaces and escalators. Branch Rickey said, "This is progress, and the only way to make progress is to make more progress." ("Yankees Bid City Buy Stadium And Seek 2d Club as Tenant", February 10, 1960). This meant that the Yankees might have to face some comeptition to be the best in New York City and the had the concern of losing fans to the new team and league. If the Yankees were to lose fans then they would lose money and that meant that there would be more paycuts which could lead to some players leaving the team.

Since the New York Yankees lost the World Series, they were devastated. None of the problems or drama that the Yankees went through, really did not affect them winning or losing the 1960 World Series. When the Yankees had that heartbreaking loss, some players blamed their other teammates. This was a loss that the Yankees had to face. They lost as a team.

Tiana Rivera.
